Journey to the River Sea

Maia has traveled from England to live with relatives along the Amazon. Miss Minton (the governess) observes as Maia struggles with the nasty behavior of the twins, Beatrice and Gwendolyn.

“Might one ask what’s the matter with you?” asked the governess when they were alone. “And please don’t say ‘Nothing.’ I hate wasting time.”

So Maia told her. If she had expected sympathy she was very disappointed. “Really, Maia, you make me tired. Why don’t you use your intelligence instead of your emotions?”

A heretical concept when our society is encouraged to solve problems with emotion.
